How to Measure Ring Size Before Buying Online

A ring size is useful only when you know which sizing system it belongs to. Before ordering, ask whether the product uses US sizes or another chart, and confirm that your chosen design is available in the required size. Guessing from a photograph is unlikely to give a comfortable fit.
Start with the correct finger
Measure the finger and hand where you intend to wear the ring. A ring that fits one hand may fit differently on the other. Avoid measuring immediately after an activity that changes how your hands feel; repeat the check at another normal point in your day.
Use a ring that already fits
Choose a round, undamaged ring worn on that same finger. Measure its internal diameter across the centre, excluding the metal walls. Compare millimetres with the seller's chart. Do not compare the outside diameter or assume two websites use identical size labels.
Know the limits of paper and string
A strip that twists, stretches or compresses the skin can produce a misleading result. Treat a home measurement as a starting estimate. If you are between sizes, ordering an expensive piece, or choosing a broad band, get measured with an appropriate ring sizer by a jeweller.
Consider the design before ordering
A wide band and a narrow band can feel different even with the same stated size. Raised settings also affect how the ring sits beside another band. Ask about resizing before purchase: a detailed or fully decorated band may have restrictions, and resizing is not automatically included.

A measurement example that avoids a common mistake
Suppose the inside diameter of a ring you own measures 18 mm. That is a measurement to compare with a chart, not a ring size called 18 in every system. Write down “18 mm internal diameter” and the finger it fits. Then use the seller's stated size chart to identify the corresponding option.
Place the ruler across the true centre of the opening, with the ring flat. Measuring a shorter line away from the centre underestimates the diameter. Measuring the metal edge as well as the opening overestimates it. Repeat the measurement and check that the ring is still round before relying on the result.
When a paper measurement disagrees with an existing ring
Do not average two different measurements and assume that solves the problem. Check whether the ring fits the intended finger, whether the strip stretched or tightened, and whether you compared circumference with diameter by mistake. These are different measurements and must be matched to the correct column of a chart.
If the results still disagree, use a physical ring sizer or a jeweller's measurement. That is particularly worthwhile for a broad band, a surprise purchase with limited exchange options or a ring whose construction makes resizing difficult.
Think about the knuckle and the final stack
A ring has to pass over the knuckle and sit comfortably where it will be worn. If those two positions differ noticeably, mention that during a professional fitting. Do not choose a painfully tight size simply to stop a ring moving, or a very loose one simply because it slides on easily.
If the new ring will be worn beside another band, try a comparable combined width during fitting. A size that feels comfortable as one narrow ring may feel different when several bands share the same area of the finger.
What should you send the seller?
Send the product link, intended variant, measurement in millimetres, measurement method and the sizing system of any ring you are comparing. Ask whether the selected design has a size-specific return or alteration condition. Keeping these details together makes the answer more useful than a message saying only that you normally wear a medium.
Save the size system, measurement and product reference together. For a surprise, a discreet conversation about sizing is often better than a confident guess. If measuring is impossible, consider the alternatives in gifts without a ring size.
